Top 13 Healthy Travel Foods For Triathletes

!±8± Top 13 Healthy Travel Foods For Triathletes

Have you ever traveled to a triathlon, pulled up to a grocery store in your rental car, fresh from the airport and starved for healthy travel food to take back to your hotel room, rented home, condo or apartment? Have you ever been on a long road trip to a triathlon and needed healthy travel food for real meals to eat on the go? Have you ever wondered if there is a healthy travel food alternative to canned food, jerky and trail mix when you're camping on the go? Then this article was designed for you, because these are the top 13 healthy travel food items I grab at a grocery store to make quick meals while I'm traveling.

These are all perfect energy sources to fuel racing on the road, so print this list and bring it with you on your next triathlon travel trip, and you'll feel more energy, perform better, and stay lean! You won't need access to a fancy specialty grocery store, and as a bonus, you can also use any of these tips for your own quick and healthy home meal preparation.

Healthy Travel Food #1: Wraps Wraps are perfect for preparing a quick snack from your hotel room, apartment, or condo, and are usually found near the bread section of the grocery store. The sky is the limit when it comes to choosing what you want to use as a wrap. I prefer gluten-free, sprouted wraps when I can get them. Spinach wraps or whole grain wraps are other popular variety that I use. If you are gluten intolerant, watching your waistline, or limiting carbohydrate, then get very large pieces of romaine lettuce or cabbage that you can use as a wrap.

Healthy Travel Food #2: Spinach / Mixed Greens During a week of travel, I use spinach and mixed greens for two primary recipes: salads and wraps. The darker greens are richer in iron, although some varieties like bok choy or kale can be a bit chewy and not good in a wrap. This is one ingredient of which I always buy more than I think I might need, because if it's around, I'll eat it quite often as a wrap-filler or salad-base, and thus be less likely to overeat on more calorie-dense foods.

Healthy Travel Food #3: Tomatoes Chopped tomatoes can be thrown over a salad, and sliced tomatoes are perfect in a wrap. Because I often find myself on foot or bicycle when visiting the grocery store, I typically
choose the small Romaine tomatoes, which travel better and bruise less than the juicy, plump variety.

Healthy Travel Food #4: Avocado - Full of appetite satiating fats and wrapped in a natural protective layer, avocados, like tomatoes, can be chopped and used as salad-topping, or sliced and placed into a wrap. Do not choose overly-soft avocadoes, which also do not travel well, and more quickly rot.

Healthy Travel Food #5: Cucumbers "Cukes" round out the "Big Three" for salads and wraps. When included with tomatoes and avocadoes, along with a base of spinach and mixed greens, they add a perfect crunch and texture to the meal.

Healthy Travel Food #6: Cheese If you are lactose intolerant, you may want to skip cheese, or double up on nuts, which can often be used in the same way as cheese. During a week of travel, I use cheese in wraps, melt cheese over an avocado for a quick snack, and top tomatoes with a slice of cheese and splash of olive oil or salad dressing. My favorite varieties are feta, swiss and mozzerella.

Healthy Travel Food #7: Yogurt Follow the same rules as cheese: if you are lactose intolerant, substitute soy milk, rice milk, almond milk or coconut milk. Fat-freee, plain yogurt is useful as a low-calorie topping for a wrap, good with fruit and nuts for breakfast, and versatile enough to be used with almond butter and dark chocolate for dessert.

Healthy Travel Food #8: Almond Butter Compared to peanut butter, almond butter is higher in healthy monounsaturated fatty acids and lower in potentially inflammatory omega 6's. For this ingredient, I typically buy less than I think I need, because it is easy to eat too many calories from almond butter. Use with breakfasts and desserts, as mentioned earlier.

Healthy Travel Food #9: Cashews / Walnuts / Almonds I typically mix these with fruit and yogurt for breakfast, toss into a wrap for extra calories and crunch, or grab a handful to satiate the appetite in the afternoon. Go for the unsalted, raw, unroasted option.

Healthy Travel Food #10: Salad Dressing Perfect for salads and wraps, a salad dressing is a smart choice only if you can find a variety with A) an olive oil base; and B) no high fructose corn syrup and added sugars. Look along the top of the salad dressing shelf for the smaller designer varieties, which will more often fit these criteria. In a pinch, just grab a small container of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette instead.

Healthy Travel Food #11: Sweet Potatoes / Yams If my travel involves physical activity, such as cycling, large amounts of walking, or a triathlon, then these tubers form the crux of my carbohydrate intake, since
they "burn clean" and also have high amounts of vitamins, minerals, and beta-carotene. In a pinch, they can be microwaved for 5 minutes, but it is better to boil them for 20 minutes or bake for 40 minutes. Usually, I will salt and eat them plain or serve them with almond butter and honey.

Healthy Travel Food #12: Fruit If I am traveling to a new or unique region, I usually experiment with varieties of fruit that are hard to get at home, in Washington state. For example, in Florida, I might stock up on juicy oranges and grapefruit; in Hawaii, stock up on fresh papaya or pineapple; and in Thailand, grab a handful of dragonfruit. Fruit is perfect for a mid-morning snack, salad topping, or breakfast addition.

Healthy Travel Food #13: Dark Chocolate Chock full of antioxidants and lower in sugars and dairy than milk chocolate, a 70%+ dark chocolate bar is a good nightcap snack after a long day of travel, and is also useful for sweetening oatmeal, breaking chunks into yogurt, or dipping in almond butter. I keep mine in the freezer.

To wrap it up (no pun intended), I very often eat a primary diet of wraps and salads while traveling, supplemented with fruits, nuts, potatoes, yogurt or milk based snacks. You'd be surprised at how healthy you can eat and how good meals can taste by simply using the 13 healthy travel foods listed above. If you want just a little extra flavor, grab salt, pepper, turmeric and cinnamon. These four spices can really dress up any of the meals discussed in this article. Finally, if you hadn¹t noticed, any of these healthy travel foods can be perfect for you to eat in the comfort of your own home too. Bon Appetit!

7 Healthy Breakfasts For An On-The-Go Lifestyle

!±8± 7 Healthy Breakfasts For An On-The-Go Lifestyle

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Statistics support it, studies prove it. Still, for many, it remains an inconvenient truth. One of the reasons for this is because it takes too much time. Here are 7 HEALTHY quick and easy breakfast ideas, that you can take on the run, to help you learn to love breakfast:

1. Smoothies - They come in all flavors and styles from just pureed fruit, to the high protein super-food version. Blend it all together and viola, you have a power breakfast to go! The recipe I make for my kids includes:

Kefir Frozen berries Whey protein or a raw egg (be sure to use very fresh organic eggs if using raw eggs) Green powder (I use Pure Synergy) Grade B maple syrup - to desired sweetness 1 teaspoonful of ground flax seeds or little bit of flax seed oil (it tastes good if you get a high quality brand and keep it refrigerated)

2. Water fried eggs - This takes very little time with hardly any clean up. Be sure to put some bread in the toaster before you get started! Put about a ¾ cup of water in the bottom of a small skillet that has a usable lid. I like to use a non-stick for eggs even though it is not really necessary. Bring the water to a full boil -this will only take a minute --and then crack in 2 eggs, season with salt if desired, and cover. Turn heat down to a medium low heat. And let is cook gently for 2-3 minutes. They should be fully set by then and go well on a piece of sprouted whole grain bread. If your yolks are set you can eat this on the go!

3. Apple with almond butter and cinnamon - This is a great light breakfast that will help you get off to the right start in the morning without weighing you down. Just cut up a fresh crisp apple into narrow slices, sprinkle with cinnamon and then drizzle 1-2 tablespoons of almond butter over it. This is so yummy you will want it for dessert too!

4. Breakfast rice bowl - Are you a whole grain kind of person? Oatmeal that is worth eating takes a bit of time, but this wont. Put some leftover brown rice or quinoa in a microwave safe bowl. Add a little bit if dried fruit such as raisins or cranberries, and then add either nut milk or other preferred milk. Heat it in the microwave until it is hot but not scalding. Add maple syrup if desired.

5. Banana sandwich - This is great on the run and pretty substantial as well. Lightly toast 1-2 pieces of sprouted whole grain bread. Spread with 1-2 tablespoons of almond butter and top with banana that has been sliced the long way. Use ¼ of the banana for a one-slice sandwich (also fold the bread to keep everything in place) and 2/4 of a banana for the 2-slice version. Once the ingredients are in place, sprinkle lightly with cinnamon (or cinnamon sugar) and place the other slice of bread on top and enjoy.

6. Savory rice bowl - You may not like sweet breakfasts, and that is just fine. This basic idea feeds most of the world. Put some leftover brown rice or quinoa in a microwave safe bowl and top with some leftover vegetables, soup, or anything that would taste good on rice. Heat in the microwave for a minute or two. This is fast and healthy!

7. Leftovers - This is almost too obvious to list however, breakfast is NOT to be skipped. In a pinch you can always have just a little bit of what you had the night before. If you have time, scramble it up in some eggs, if not, do the best you can. Make a little sandwich with it, put it in a container you can heat up and take with you, just be sure to ALWAYS eat breakfast!

Remember, a breakfast does not have to big or fancy to do its job, it just has to be eaten. Make this a habit and you will find that you have more energy, clearer thinking, stronger immune system and less illness, and maintain a healthy weight more easily.

The Proper Diet - Good Foods For Low Body Fat, Vibrant Health, and Longevity!

!±8± The Proper Diet - Good Foods For Low Body Fat, Vibrant Health, and Longevity!

Part Five of the Seven-Part Series:  Why Do American Women Get Fat? What You Can Do About It.

The Problem:

At any given time two-thirds of all American adults are on a diet. Of those, 29 percent are men and 44 percent are women. Yet, only five percent of dieters will keep the weight off. In fact, most will actually regain their lost weight, plus more. With all the money being spent on diets and diet products, Americans aren't losing weight. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, overweight and obesity has reached epidemic levels. One of the main reasons dieters fail at their "get fit" attempts and remain a statistic is because they choose "fad diets" as opposed to a balanced, healthy diet. In fact the weight-loss industry makes its billions because "millions succumb to 'quick-fix' claims, seeking a (non-existent) effortless weight-loss method.

Diet Defined:

After a "fad diet" fails, most dieters give up, claiming, "diets don't work".   It seems to me that the word "diet" is the target of criticism and creates a lot of confusion. Is diet a bad four-letter word? If you eat food (or liquids), you're on a diet. Diet is defined as "food or drink regularly consumed," or "a controlled intake of food and drink designed for weight loss, for health or religious reasons, or to control a medical condition." The real issue is whether you on a proper diet, for your body to either lose weight (fat), or maintain a healthy and acceptable body weight.

Diets that Don't Work:

Instead of saying, "diets don't work", we should specify which diets don't work. Unhealthy diets don't work. Restrictive and unbalanced diets don't work. Starvation diets don't work. Fake food diets don't work. Diet pills don't work. Massive supplement intake diets don't work. Fad (lose weight fast) diets don't work. We should confront the real issue; most diet programs and products offer quick-fix solutions and are basically gimmicks full of false promises, magic potions, and misleading propaganda. As a fitness expert for over 27 years, I've seen diets come and go (and some recycled) and have witnessed first-hand, the damage done by "trend diets." No sensible diet will ever compromise your physical or mental health for the sake of looking good. In fact, you don't have to starve, deprive yourself, settle for fake food, lose your sanity and health, or take pills to lose weight and get into great shape! I know that getting and staying healthy and fit involves a lifestyle of the "proper diet and exercise regimen."

The Solution:

First and foremost, don't fall victim to "quick-fix" diets and make certain your diet is proper (appropriate and sound)! Unless there is a specific medical condition that should eliminate certain foods, you should be leery of any diet program that lacks sufficient amount of calories, restricts one of the key nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fats), and even restricts certain wholesome foods like carrots, potatoes and bananas.

The good news is there is finally a rise in sound (proper) diet programs that will help you lose weight and gain health. There are now widely accepted, well-researched nutritional principles found in most well respected, leading diet programs, ones that do not offer quick-fix solutions that are found in so-called "fad diets".

Most fitness experts, nutritionists, diet gurus, and well-informed doctors agree that we should consume clean and wholesome foods and liquids to attain (and maintain) low body fat and vibrant health. We should eliminate junk food, fast food, fried food, and highly processed food. The real debate begins over how many calories we should consume each day and the nutrient ratio. The other debate exists over whether it is better to be a vegetarian or vegan - or not! Most also agree that fat loss is where it's at, not just weight loss, that real and lasting weight-loss results don't happen over night, and getting fit is best accomplished when you include exercise. According the Web MD, "proven weight-management strategies include a balanced diet with reduced calories with a regular exercise regimen." The key to low body fat, vibrant health, and longevity is a lifestyle of the PROPER DIET and exercise!

Proper Diet:

The proper diet includes the following factors: Liquid Consumption, Quantity and Distribution of Calories (daily caloric intake: under eating and over eating; daily nutrient ratio of protein, carbohydrates, and fat; and  meal size: portion control), and Quality and Purity of Calories.

I would like to specifically address Quality and Purity of Calories. Calories are our friend, however, the wrong kind of calories will do harm (make women fat and sick-the opposite of fit and healthy)! Calories that are not wholesome and do not promote mental, spiritual, and physical well-being include:

Fat calories Unhealthy calories Dirty calories Impure calories Old and dead calories Non-kosher calories

In summary quality and purity of calories include:

Clean and pure foods-natural, fresh, organic, and kosher Lean, healthy, fibrous, and alive foods Foods made by God (nature) for human consumption Carefully chosen man-made or man- manipulated foods
Good Foods:

Unless you are a nutritionist, food expert, or well-informed fitness professional making good food choices can be a confusing subject. Even experts sometimes disagree on what to eat. There are obvious choices of what not to eat, namely most packaged, processed, and man-made foods-especially the ones full of preservatives and additives. However, some packaged and man-made foods may be good to eat, and some may even be a smart diet cheat. As you do your own research on packaged and man-made foods you can add more of them to your diet. Just remember that when you consume more man- made foods, you are increasing your odds of making mistakes in your food choices.

Pure and wholesome foods (God/nature-made foods) will always be a staple in any diet, whether you want to lose fat, improve health, gain lean body mass, increase your fitness level, become an athlete, or even just maintain your current weight and health condition.

Good Food Choices Short List

Since I have been in the fitness industry for over 27 years, I am always asked, "what do you eat?" and/or "what should I eat?' Here is a VERY short list, but I am sure it will be helpful.

Here is a good rule to follow: "In choosing foods-now and later-use the Golden Food Rule: "If God (nature) made it, it is safe. If it is man-made, then it must be examined thoroughly." Quote from MY DIVA DIET: A Woman's Last Diet Book

Fresh-water fish (with fins and scales; like salmon, halibut, trout, and tuna)   Organic free-range and grass-fed animal meats (beef, poultry, turkey) - (skinless, white meat from poultry) Kosher meats (if you eat meat you should only eat it once a month or less and trim the fat-good choices are filet mignon, flank and top sirloin)) Eggs from organic, free-range, vegetarian-fed hens (use egg whites and only a few whole eggs each week) Carefully chosen meat products (like Boars Head deli meat -- fresh and white meat)   Organic low- to no-fat dairy - (eat or drink minimal amounts)   Fresh and organic legumes Raw and unsalted nuts and seeds (dry roasted on occasion) Plant protein products-clean and pure (like nut butter, hummus, soy butter, and more) Organic whole grains; like barley, oats, rice, amaranth, buckwheat, couscous, kamut, millet, quinoa, rye, spelt, and others Grain products-sprouted, stone ground (baked, never fried); like bread, cereal, rice cakes, mochi, corn tortillas, etc.  Organic fresh fruits and vegetables Fresh and untainted herbs and spices  Extra-virgin olive oil and other unrefined vegetable oils Limited amounts of all-natural spreads, sauces, sweeteners, salad dressings, and dips. All natural gluten-free, low-sugar and low-fat smart diet cheats; like are fudgsicles, popsicles puddings and yogurts. Dark chocolate (low sugar of course)! Barbara's Fig Bars, Mrs. May's Naturals Pumpkin Crunch, and Lundberg Wasabi Rice Chips.   Don't forget to consume plenty of water each day and the proper amounts of other liquids. Liquid consumption is another topic altogether!

www.wholefoodies.org - Bring 1 part water (1 cup) to a boil. Add 1 part quinoa (1 cup) to the water along with some sea salt or seaweed. Seaweed is preferable due to its easily assimilated organic salts that they contain. Once the quinoa and water are at a boil, put a lid on it and reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes. Dress it up afterwards with spices, nuts, seeds, seasonings, fresh vegetables, herbs or a sauce.

How to Choose Healthy Breads

!±8± How to Choose Healthy Breads

Always read the label. Read the list of ingredients, which are listed in descending order by weight. The first ingredient listed is present in the largest amount, and in bread products, that ingredient should include the word "whole."

What to look for on the label

Avoid enriched it means that the flour had all its beneficial properties (vitamins, minerals) removed and that some were added back.

Go for fortified- Fortified means that on top of what's already in the food, vitamins and minerals were added.

High fiber - bread should contain about 5 grams of fiber per serving.

Low sugar- if one of the first three ingredients on the list ends in -ose (glucose, lactose, and sucrose), or is sugar or corn syrup, you shouldn't buy it.

Good fats - try to find types of bread with monounsaturated fats (canola or olive oil) or polyunsaturated fats (corn, peanut or sesame oil).

Enriched wheat flour is enriched with nutrients that are lost during processing, often including thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin D, iron, folic acid and calcium. Even though these nutrients are added back, the flour still doesn't contain the bran or the germ and isn't as good for you as whole-wheat flour.

Stone-ground describes how the flour was milled. Although it may sound healthy, stone-ground flour is basically the same as wheat flour. It's nowhere near as good for you as 100 percent whole-wheat flour.

Rye flour is traditionally used to bake sourdough breads. They are high in insoluble fiber and can help some women avoid gallstones and the phytoestrogens may be helpful to reduce symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. Rye's lignans may also protect against breast cancer.

3. Crispbreads like Ryvita are lower in calorie, crunchy snacks. Try to get the ones made from whole grain. Top with light cream cheese and smoked salmon.

4. 100% Whole Grain Bread will have whole wheat flour listed first on the label. These breads have a lower glycemic index than refined or white breads. That means it helps control your blood glucose and cholesterol levels and can lower your chance of developing heart disease and type-2 diabetes.

5. Sprouted Grain Bread is made from soaking the grain and allowing it to sprout then mashing it together and baking it. Sprouting allows the enzymes in the grain to convert some of the carbohydrates and fats to vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
